Alan has over 45 years of experience in the automotive sector and as a senior executive at Ford Motor Company had been involved with more than 40 automobile manufacturing plants on 5 different continents. Under his leadership 9 new assembly plants were constructed around the world and more than 120 vehicle production launches successfully completed. Born and raised in London, England, he spent several years living in Japan, the United States and Thailand and has had several board level experiences in a number of countries globally.
Alan joined Ford Motor Company as a student in 1959 and spent his initial years training as a powertrain manufacturing engineer at the Ford of Britain Dagenham facility. He moved to Ford’s Export Operations in 1968 with specific responsibility for new vehicle launches, and subsequently, new plant design and commissioning. Promoted to Operations Manager in 1986 his role was expanded to cover all logistics and material supply for Europe’s extensive knock-down assembly (KD) business as well as the management of the low volume assembly locations.
In 1993, he moved to Japan as a leader in the launch of new Asia-Pacific initiatives. He worked with the Mazda-Ford Joint Venture to establish a light truck plant in Thailand, and with Mahindra-Ford Joint Venture developing a car assembly plant in India. He was instrumental in the establishment of manufacturing for Ford in China and co-led the team that developed the relationship with Changan Motors. Other major projects included the design and construction of new facilities in the Philippines and Vietnam and the acquisition and redevelopment of a new plant for AMIM in Malaysia, where he was a member of the Board of Directors. He has extensive knowledge of establishing and managing joint venture operations with both majority and minority partners from both the private and public sectors.
Alan completed his Ford career with six years as Director of Manufacturing & Quality and two years as Director of Material Planning & Logistics for the Asia-Pacific region. He is an Incorporated Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology and holds qualifications in production and mechanical engineering. Alan is acknowledged as a worldwide industry expert in the field of low volume vehicle manufacturing inclusive of designing, commissioning and managing assembly systems in the range from 1,000 units per annum to 120,000 units per annum.
