Dear Team Indiana,
Last December, the right question was asked. Governor Mitch Daniels wanted to know what it would take to get Carbon Motors to select the State of Indiana. I dispatched my team to go take a look but I didn’t realize at that time what was going to occur over the next several months.
In early March of this year, Mayor Leonard Urban and his team flew down to see us with same question clearly top of mind. He asked that before we make a decision, that we at least go visit Connersville, Indiana. I committed to bring the E7 and members of the Carbon Motors executive team to Connersville and give the State of Indiana a fair shot in Carbon’s site selection process. To be perfectly honest, the team and I really didn’t feel like they had what it would take to make it past the first round of cuts, but a promise is a promise.
Oh my, how we were mistaken.
Over 7,300 Hoosiers greeted us with open arms on the 5th of May 2009 at a shuttered automotive plant in Connersville. “Pure” is the only way to describe the people and their motives. They did not beg us for jobs; they proudly offered us a home and a permanent place in their community with honesty and integrity. Their support was unconditional – where we ultimately chose to locate our campus mattered not, as long as we created new American jobs and supported our nation’s law enforcement first responders. To say that we were overwhelmed by their tremendously “bold” efforts on that beautiful sunny day would be an outrageous understatement. They touched us to the core of our souls.
We met with Governor Daniels the day following the first Connersville Rally, and were told that the State of Indiana liked to move swiftly. “Government at the speed of business,” exclaimed the Governor. The team and I were cautiously optimistic. We are all firm believers in under promise and over deliver, and this type of statement did not allow any room for error. But during the process, Governor Daniels has returned every phone call and every email within minutes, and the State and local community has had nothing but a “relentless” online, offline, above and below the line approach to recruiting Carbon Motors without question.
“Pure. Bold. Relentless.” It’s the Carbon Motors mantra we hold dear amongst ourselves – and it was to our amazement to watch a whole new set of friends and supporters carry themselves exactly the way we would have done it.
On behalf of Carbon Motors Corporation and the 840,000 law enforcement first responders that secure our homeland every day, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for your unwavering perseverance, your generosity, your patriotism, and your spirited words and thoughtful deeds. By unanimous vote of the Board of Directors, we accept your kind and gracious offer and I am pleased to announce that the State of Indiana, Fayette County, and the City of Connersville will be the new home of Carbon Motors Corporation!
Congratulations to all of us – we have re-kindled that true American spirit in a manner that will resonate across the entirety of this great country of ours. Now that Governor Daniels’ question has been asked and answered let’s get back to work. We’ve got a country to begin to re-build, together.
“Ladies and gentlemen, start your (clean diesel) engines!”
Warmest of Regards,
William Santana Li
