Yesterday the White House Middle Class Task Force met on the subject of “The Future of Manufacturing.” The Vice President headlined the gathering, releasing a White House report on the “enormous challenges” faced by manufacturers and announcing the White House’s support for increasing tax credits for qualifying “green” jobs related to the production of things like wind turbines, solar panels and batteries. Watch Vice President Biden’s video on manufacturing tax credits here.
I’ve worked in manufacturing a long time and I share the Administration’s view that a strong manufacturing base is critical to strong, vibrant and productive communities – and so do the people of Connersville. That’s exactly why nearly 10,000 people from Connersville and Fayette County welcomed Carbon Motors last summer when we arrived for nothing more than a site survey. A community with decades of automotive manufacturing experience (and 16% unemployment) understands the promise of good manufacturing jobs – greater benefits and higher wages.
I have had the honor and privilege of directly meeting and briefing a number of key legislators and officials including U.S. Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), U.S. Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN), and U.S. Representative Mike Pence (R-IN).
We have also briefed Ron Bloom (Obama’s Manufacturing Czar and head of the auto task force) and Dr. Ed Montgomery (Director Recovery of Auto Communities and Workers).
Along the way, I have also met U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC), U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), U.S. Representative John Barrow (D-GA), U.S. Representative Nathan Deal (R-GA), U.S. Representative James Clyburn (D-SC), U.S. Gresham Barratt (R-SC), U.S. Representative Bob Inglis (R-SC), and U.S. Representative John Spratt (D-SC). They all understand what is at stake and the importance of the Carbon E7.
So does the Carbon Motors Advisory Board which is comprised of two former cabinet level officials and the vice-chair of the 9-11 commission. Governor Tom Ridge (the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security), the Honorable Lee Hamilton (former Indiana congressman and vice-chair of the 9-11 commission) and Dr. Lee Brown (President Clinton’s Drug Czar and former NYC Police Commissioner) – all of these fine honorable gentlemen understand the importance of what we are doing and have graciously helped guide the efforts of Carbon Motors along through its growth process over the past seven years.
Through the leadership of Governor Mitch Daniels (R-IN), the State of Indiana, Fayette County, and the City of Connersville have made sizable investments in attracting Carbon Motors to southeastern Indiana and have bent over backwards for the project – investments that will pay off many times over – not only for Indiana but the entire country.
Now it is time for the federal government to do its part and demonstrate its commitment to ushering in a new chapter for American manufacturing. Since 12 August 2009, the federal government has held in its hands a request that unequivocally meets or exceeds every single business, technical and legal requirement for the ATVM loan program without question.
Carbon Motors is past “shovel ready”. A breakthrough product designed by-cops-for-cops, an overwhelming level of demand represented by over a $600 million backlog of reservations from 346 law enforcement agencies across 47 states, funding from the private and public sector, a shuttered automotive facility, the team in place, and 10,000 residents in Connersville ready to get to work. Together, we can simultaneously make a material impact on jobs, energy, and homeland security… a “three-fer!”
There are 840,000 law enforcement responders across this country in every single Congressional district and 10,000 people in Connersville counting on you to join the effort of creating thousands of new green American jobs of national importance. It is time to stop the rhetoric and put pen to paper. We have our shovels in hand, fired up, and are ready to go!
