Frequently Asked Questions

The Company

Who’s building the E7?

Carbon Motors Corporation is a new American automaker and will be manufacturing the vehicle in its own facility. Our management and engineering team includes a number of individuals who previously have worked for major automakers, so Carbon Motors is well-versed in the challenges and opportunities of all aspects of vehicle design, manufacturing, finance, management, marketing and service.

Why doesn’t Carbon Motors just team up with one of the existing automakers?

It does not make sense for us to team up with an existing automaker for a number of legal, political, legacy and business reasons. However, we do have friendly relations with several automakers and we will be purchasing the engine from an existing manufacturer.

Can this type of niche production be profitable for a new company?

Yes. Starting with a clean slate, with a new business model, and no legacy issues (such as health care and pension benefits for generations of retired workers) affords us the unique opportunity to tailor the solution to the marketplace. We are building the entire company around mid-volume production (say 10,000 – 80,000 units per annum versus 400,000 units per year of a typical OEM automaker). That requires new business processes, new technologies, and new legal structures.

Existing automakers worldwide have pretty deep pockets. Why don’t they build their own purpose-built vehicle for law enforcement?

Mass production, mass distribution, and mass marketing automakers have very little interest in very small niche markets due to extreme difficulties in making profits at these lower volumes. This is one of the reasons that a purpose-built law enforcement patrol vehicle has not existed in over 100 years of automotive history. In addition, at least two major automakers have told us quite bluntly that they would be very happy to have this vehicle on the road so they can concentrate their resources on vehicle segments that are much more lucrative for them.
