Shifting into High Gear

The letter arrived from the Department of Energy in a very non-descript, FedEx envelope. Carbon’s application for the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program was deemed “substantially complete,” bringing the hopes and dreams of 10,000 people in desperate need of jobs that much closer to reality.

As staggering as they are, sometimes numbers just aren’t enough to really drive a point home. Especially in an economic downturn, when every month we hear about additional job losses and unemployment/underemployment struggles. Some may become numb to the numbers.

We usually read or listen to these statistics, but this map shows us what has happened, and it is a striking visualization of how the unemployment situation (and the state of our national economy as a whole) has deteriorated. Be sure to hit “play” to watch the decline.

A jobs report from last Friday offered a bleak summary of what 2009 held for American workers: the national unemployment rate averaged 9.3% and a total of 4.2 million jobs were cut by employers in one year alone.

President Obama also reiterated Friday the need for additional green American jobs – jobs that Carbon Motors stands ready to create, with a campus selected and shovels in hand. We are excited about these latest developments and are shifting into high gear to turn this nasty trend around and help put America back to work!
