Clean Diesel Vehicle Selected as Green Car of the Year (again)

At the December 3rd Los Angeles Auto Show the Audi A3 TDI with its “clean diesel” engine won the 2010 Green Car of the Year award against a field of fuel efficient vehicles that include hybrid and alternative fuel powertrains from virtually every automotive company. This marks the second year in a row where a clean diesel powertrain has taken the top prize (last year was the VW Jetta TDI).

So why is a clean diesel powertrain selected over all those headline grabbing hybrids? The answer is that it offers power, performance and driving range, while still providing reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Clean diesel technology delivers what consumers want: power and fuel economy, while helping the environment.

When it came to deciding on the mission critical powertrain for the E7 vehicle, the team reviewed all available technologies worldwide that would meet the needs of homeland security. Power, pick-up, and reliability are critical to the law enforcement officer; reducing fuel consumption and lowering fuel expenditures is vital to agencies; and lowering exhaust emissions matters to everyone.

The new breed of advanced clean diesels are able to satisfy all these requirements and do so more effectively than gasoline engines – so the technology choice for the E7 was easy!

When the Carbon Motors team first experienced our chosen advanced clean diesel powertrain, the overwhelming response was one of disbelief — it was our version of ‘Mythbusters’! Expectations for noise and performance were immediately exceeded, and even the fuel consumption surprised a few team members with how low it was.

We are looking forward to getting our first prototypes into the hands of our Carbon Council members to share the experience of the “Green Machine”, the Carbon Motors way…
