"So Where Do I Apply For A Job?"

image

“So Where Do I Apply?” must be the #1 Frequently Asked Question since we announced that Connersville, Indiana would be home at the end of July 2009. We have a great deal of work ahead of us before we begin full-scale production, and we have certainly been flattered by all of the calls, letters, emails, blog postings, and general smoke signals with such kind words and tremendous enthusiasm for our efforts to produce the world’s first purpose-built law enforcement patrol vehicle — thank you!

As you might imagine, the types of skills that are going to be needed in the short, medium, and long-term will vary as we go “through the process”: engineering the vehicle; building digital prototypes and a few dozen physical prototypes; planning the overall architecture for the site; testing the vehicles up north in below freezing weather (where even people in igloos will laugh at us); then crossing death valley in a desert somewhere for high temperature testing; to hitting the tracks in Europe for some fine tuning (Nürburgring here we come!); crashing a few of these prototypes into a wall (Ouch! No test dummies need apply, but thanks!); refurbishing the facility; installing the final assembly and end-of-line testing equipment; and showing our customers what we have in store for them all along the entire journey….

Oh, and there is some major IT work to be done; we must bring on dozens of suppliers, develop a few websites and marketing plans; go on more Pure Justice Tours; develop and conduct service training sessions; maintain positive and collaborative government relations; sign a few contracts, keep score with some accounting; there’s a bit of legal work, safety training, and environmental engineering yet to complete, and along the way, we need to have some town hall meetings so everyone stays on track, pulling in the same direction! And finally……..finally…..cutting that ribbon when the first E7 rolls off the assembly line! To say the least we certainly haven’t been and won’t be, watching the grass grow.

OK, so let’s answer the question, “Where Do I Apply”. At this stage, there are 2 key items that must be addressed before the hiring in earnest can begin.

First, the widely publicized environmental issues with the site must be addressed and we are working with the responsible authorities to that end. Everyone is pulling in the same direction which is good first test of the local, state, and federal authorities working collaboratively with the private sector. Tough test but lots of smart and driven people working on it….

Second, on 12 August 2009 we filed our application to secure a loan in the amount of $310 million with U.S. Department of Energy under the provisions of Section 136 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (the “ATVMIP – Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program”). As the Carbon E7 addresses significant cross-cabinet issues across the U.S. Departments of Justice, Energy, Homeland Security, Transportation, and Labor and moreover it is in the national security and socioeconomic interests of the USA that the Carbon E7 be expedited to production, we are looking to see that the U.S. Department of Energy meets its announced internal target of “4 months from application date to flow of funds”.

When the job openings do become available we will certainly post them on our site. I understand the intense interest in joining the team (and again we are flattered!) but we need a little time to get ready for some pretty significant growth. Besides we are still in process of filling out the Change of Address forms! On that point, I do like the sound of:

Hope you like it!

I would hope that in your search that their would be a great importance put on hiring from the local area within the surrounding five counties. As a former Visteon employee with an engineering background and a Business degree I would like to see the opportunities stay local. This area has the experience and drive to get the job done. This local plant had the best profit record of many of its sister plants when it was owned by Ford and when it was Visteon. Our products were built with quality and every area of production and design was focused on reducing cost to improve its value. I hope that when it comes time to review applicants that you take into consideration the experience level of those of us who have worked in this area over those with degrees with experience in some other type of industry.

This is an abolutely fantastic project being undertaken by Carbon Motors! Worked for a European manufacturer entering the USA police car market using a mass produced platform. I had the honor of traveling througout the USA and Europe to visit law enforcement and international Government agencies in an effort to modify and tailor production methods to produce a police vehicle and other special vehicles that would more closely match the individual needs of law enforcement and Government customers. It became apparent how difficult this would be to accomplish using a mass produced platform and performing modifications to exacting customer needs.........slow and painful were the words of the day. Law enforcement needs specialized vehicles designed for law enforecment. Not mass produced vehicles modified for law enforcement. Full control of the product lifecycle is another area Carbon Motors has successfully addressed. To produce and meet the requirements of law enforcement, not to mention all the legal and homoligation matters, required a bold new way of thinking. That is exactly what Carbon Motors did and that is exactly why they will be successful.......hats off to Santana Li and his team and I wish them much success with this endeavor. I will continue to monitor funding progress as the project moves forward. It would be a honor to participate in this effort. Like finishing unfinished business.....someday soon I will be knocking on the door of Carbon Motors looking to participate.......sooner rather than later.

Mr. Li: I"m the person who called about the mentally challanged, I want to stress that they are a viable workforce and very dependable. We have a very compendent staff working with them to bring out their best attributes. I was very surprised when I started for Achieva Resources on how dedicated they are in constructing and completing the job assignments given to them. The next time you are in Connersville stop by Achieva (across from Visteon Plant) and see for yourself what is accomplished by a workforce that does not know the phrase I CAN'T, you will be surprised. There may be a small place in Carbon Motors for people who like to please.

I am very interested in becoming part of the Carbon Motors team. I have 15 years experience as a maintenance technician and feel that I would be a great asset to the company. My father being a retired federal agent and police officer before that feels that your creation is a much needed improvement to the men in the field. I have checked out everything I can on the E7 and think it will be a great vehicle, it will be the Rolls Royce of purpose built vehicles. It should take a lickin and keep on ticking. Thanks for keeping this in the USA and close to home for me. I can be reached at the above e-mail address, thanks for any consideration.

You very correctly state that much work has to be done before hiring can begin in earnest. I believe my company can be of great help with some of the work that should be beginning now, when you may not have all the staff you need yet. Our core business involves assembly facility planning, layout and design. We help develop the assembly processes, determine optimal facility layouts, prepare budgets for process equipment and tooling, convey facility requirements to the architect/engineer or construction manager, determine material handling and logistics requirements, etc. Our experience at doing this makes us invaluable at the onset of a project in the planning and budgeting process as well as in the implementation and launch phases. We are currently providing these services for another startup vehicle manufacturer that is also in the DOE ATVM loan application process, so we are very familiar with your current needs. Feel free to visit our website www.ckgppw.com for more information and contact me to discuss further how we might be able to assist you in this exciting project.

I agree with a lot of the comments here about hiring local talent. I am from Richmond, IN and know how hard Hoosier's work. I would love to be a part of the Carbon Motors Team. I am retired Navy Electronics Technician with 20 years of experience and am currently working in the steel industry as a maintenance instrumentation technician. I have been working in this position for over 4 years now. I know that I could be a very valuable asset to your team. Please keep me in mind when you start hiring electricians. Thanks.
