Some of the Key Questions on Site Location

image

Ahead of sharing a bit more about each State in the coming days and weeks, perhaps a few key questions can help drive the thinking:

Best People – are there boots on the ground in terms of technical capability (homeland security, defense, automotive, etc.)? Can we recruit the right type of talent at the gold collar, white collar, light blue collar, and blue collar levels?

Great Customer Experience – would the location provide an opportunity to offer a great experience when customers come to visit the Carbon Campus for training, sales development, or just want to see their cars being built as well as meet the team?

Key Suppliers and Partners – are there sufficient suppliers in the region to support an industrial entity? Can we minimize the inbound and outbound logistics costs? Where have the new recent major industrial firms located?

Major International Airport – is there a major international airport for the benefit of customers, suppliers, teams, and executives?

Superior Culture – can you build the game-changing team in a vibrant environment that will yield a culture compliant with the Carbon Motors brand?

Partner with the Political Will – does the particular state and community have a genuine interest in being a true partner in a private/public collaboration and have the true political will to make things happen

So many questions and so many locations to think through (and these are just a few of the 400 criteria we’ve developed)! Our ‘short-list’ is starting to firm up and over time we will be answering these key questions…..stay tuned.

I'm interested to see how the location issue develops, especially with so many people attempting to get Carbon to set up camp. I am from a rural county in Wisconsin. Just under one hour to our east, the Janesville GM plant had closed their doors, leaving so many people out of work, many from our County. The one thing I would like to see is for Carbon to be able to have all they need and more from their chosen location. On the other hand, I would really like to see Carbon be able to help an area that is relatively "untouched" as far as economic development is concerned. Lafayette County, WI is just that. The County and Municipalities are begging for development and would practically do most anything to get good businesses into the area. In the end, I know Carbon would prefer a solid infrastructure; however an economy boost to a rural area, not just ours, is very much needed. Our County may not get to see the plant built here, but I would like to see something...anything.

Waterloo, Ontario, Canada is the junction of the North American auto industry and the North American high tech industry, (and also has the many advantages of being in Canada such as universal healthcare for employees.) I can't imagine a better place for Carbon Motor Company's campus.

I can't underscore the importance of consider Norfolk, Virginia enough. It's home to Ford's shuttered F-150 plant, the company's oldest and best producer which was only shuttered due to waning popularity of the F-150. Port access is the best in the country. The labor force is here. There's plenty of rail. You must add Norfolk, VA to the short list.
